Towards the end of last month, Ellie Goulding linked up with Juice WRLD for “Hate Me,” a new single featuring production from Demi Lovato and Madonna producer Jason Evigan and Kanye West and Jennifer Lopez collaborators The Monsters and Strangerz. Now, the chart-topping songstress is teaming up with director Saam Farahmand to create the aforementioned record’s visual companion.

“I just went all out in this song … As soon as I heard this song, I heard the track, I heard the guitar, it just, I don’t know, it kind of compelled me to do something a little bit different and something a bit darker,” Ellie Goulding recently told Zane Lowe, opening up for an interview with Apple Music’s Beats 1 network. “I needed to do it, I needed to get it out of my system. I think you can always do the songs that give some kind of resolution, or give some kind of hope for a relationship. But the truth of the matter is that humans are crazy and do f***ed up things to people, and that’s the truth. I realized that I can always try and wear these rose-tinted glasses when it comes to my own past relationships or my friends’ relationships, but actually when it comes down to it some things are just really messed up. Sometimes I think you need to hear that.”

“I played it to Juice WRLD, he loved it and wanted to be involved,” Goulding adds, sharing more insight into the back-story behind “Hate Me.” “I think that was a testament as well, because he was like, ‘You know what? I feel this as well.’ And I’m sure he’s been through some stuff. Yeah, so it just kind of all just worked out.”

Back in April, Ellie Goulding also appeared on the official Game of Thrones soundtrack.
