Blood Orange Showcases Breadth of Influences on 'Angel's Pulse'
The mixtape features Tinashe, Kelsey Lu, Arca, Project Pat, and more.

Returning from his critically acclaimed 2018 album Negro Swan, fast-rising UK artist Dev Hynes — artist name Blood Orange — has returned with a variety of fast-paced soundscapes and psychedelic sensibilities via his latest project, Angel’s Pulse. Moving away from Negro Swan’s chilling and often anxiety-filled sounds, Hynes here has ever-so-slightly tweaked his vision to reflect an array of hard-packed possibilities, enlisting the likes of Toro Y Moi, Tinashe, Kelsey Lu, Justine Sky, Project Pat, Arca, and more for the project.
While the project undoubtedly reflects Hynes’ expertly-mandated sound, many of the tracks relish in influences from “shoe gaze” indie rock to dancehall, various inspirations are aptly blended alongside Hynes’ idiosyncratic vision of hip-hop and R&B. In many senses, the mixtape is the most expansive presentation of ideas that Hynes has released thus far, highlighting the artist’s immense influences.
