Watch the First Trailer for HBO Films' 'Deadwood: The Movie'
Taking us back to the Wild West.
Deadwood ended its successful three-season run 13 years ago, but the residents of the South Dakota town are soon to be back in action. HBO Films has released the first official trailer for Deadwood: The Movie, giving us a familiar glimpse of Al Swearengen and Sheriff Seth Bullock.
The upcoming movie takes place in 1889, 12 years after the final season’s storyline, during South Dakota’s inclusion as the Union’s 40th state. Deadwood locals including Sol Star, Molly Parker and Calamity Jane reunite with their fellow townsmen to celebrate the momentous occasion as it marks a new chapter in Deadwood’s history.
According to producer Carolyn Strauss, the film mainly focuses on time—particularly the state’s addition to the Union and how it affects people in different ways. “The time has taken its greatest toll on [Al] Swearengen. He’s the person who really drove so much of the life of the town and there’s a sense of that power waning somewhat, and what ensues of that is a big part of the story,” she explained.
Deadwood first debuted on HBO in 2004 and ended in 2006, picking up eight Emmys during its lifespan and rave reviews from critics.
Deadwood: The Movie premieres on HBO this May 31. Watch the trailer above.
