'Pokémon Sword' and 'Shield' Announced For Nintendo Switch
The eighth-generation ‘Pokémon’ game arrives this year.
Nintendo and Game Freak have officially announced a next-generation Pokémon for the Switch called Pokémon Sword and Shield, which will serve as the eighth installment of the core titles and the first to arrive on the home console.
Following the success of Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee, Game Freak hosted a Nintendo Direct this morning to introduce us the games and its new setting, the Galar region. The expansive region is host to an assortment of environments ranging from idyllic countrysides, bustling cities, and snow-covered mountains. Of course, the region can be explored while on the hunt for Gym Badges on your trainer’s quest to become Champion.
Pokémon Sword and Shield introduce three new starters to the franchise: Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble. Grookey is a mischievous Grass-type Chimp Pokémon, Scorbunny’s an energetic Fire-type Rabbit, and Sobble is a stealthy Water-type Lizard.
“Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield are the latest exciting adventures in the Pokémon video game journey that began twenty-three years ago on this day,” said Pokémon Company President & CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara. “Since then, Trainers around the world have discovered new Pokémon, engaged in epic battles, and made countless memories along the way. We look forward to continuing this journey by exploring a stunning new region in the Pokémon universe when the games launch later this year on Nintendo Switch.”
There hasn’t been a release in the core series since Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon in 2017, and fans can expect Sword and Shield to arrive sometime this Fall.
