Nintendo is a Japanese gaming company that was originally founded by Fusajiro Yamauchi in 1889 as a playing card business. Developer Shigeru Miyamoto was hired in 1977 to design Nintendo's first console, the Color TV-Game, but the company wouldn't see huge success until Miyamoto shifted into designing the arcade game 'Donkey Kong' in 1981. The title introduced early iterations of the titular character and its protagonist Mario, also known as Jumpman. Nintendo would go on to produce the handheld Game & Watch before creating its Nintendo Entertainment System console, where some of the best-known and top-selling gaming franchises were born, such as 'Super Mario Bros.,' 'The Legend of Zelda,' and 'Tetris.' Nintendo has gone on to become one of the most influential companies in the gaming industry and one of Japan's most valuable businesses.
