Jennifer Hudson Belts out "Respect" in Aretha Franklin Biopic Teaser
Hudson embodies the legendary soul singer in the forthcoming film.
Of the many celebrities who have paid tribute to beloved soul music icon Aretha Franklin, few are more deserving to portray the “Natural Woman” singer than Jennifer Hudson. The Dreamgirls star was first confirmed to portray Franklin in 2018, but only now have we received a first look at her performance in the upcoming Respect.
Hudson is a natural choice to star as the iconic vocalist; not only did the American Idol veteran perform tributes to Franklin at the 2011 Grammy Awards and 2014 BET Awards but Franklin herself selected Hudson to star in a film about her life.
In the approximately-40-second clip, the new teaser showcases Hudson’s chops as she performs an acapella version of Franklin’s unforgettable “Respect,” which is appropriately also the name of the film. Liesl Tommy directs the forthcoming biopic, which will reportedly track Franklin’s life, from singing in her father’s church to becoming one of the world’s most famous voices.
Watch the Respect teaser above and expect the film to premiere on October 9, 2020.
Meanwhile, a Mac Miller biopic was recently confirmed to be one of Hollywood’s hottest undeveloped properties.
