Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce portray Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis and Netflix‘s upcoming movie The Two Popes. Directed by Academy Award nominee Fernando Meirelles (City of God), the trailer above showcases Cardinal Bergoglio (Pryce), requesting permission from Pope Benedict (Hopkins) to retire in 2012 after he becomes frustrated with the direction of the church.
Pope Benedict invites him to the Vatican, where he reveals a secret behind closed doors that shake the foundation of the Catholic Church. As the two men get to know each other more, Benedict tells Bergoglio that he has the potential to become the next pope and that he wants to retire. Although Bergoglio initially doesn’t want the position, he eventually warms up to the idea.
