Musician Bakar Shares the Possessions That Are Pieces of Him
The next story in the I COLLECT, THEREFORE I AM series from Tiffany & Co.
London-based artist Bakar is more than just a musician: He is a storyteller. The “Scott Free” singer creates work that’s undeniably sentimental, using the medium to connect listeners to his own personal moments. He brings narratives to life through music and memories that transcend pen and paper. “It’s important for me to instill pieces of me in [my work] in some way, shape or form,” he says, “It makes it so much deeper.” In the same vein, he holds his physical mementos in equally high regard — to him, they are timeless and grant him a “portal into the good times.” By spotlighting his keepsakes and the stories behind them for the I COLLECT, THEREFORE I AM series from Tiffany & Co., he honors how material possessions become the heirlooms we cherish the most — just like the pieces in the jewelry house’s new Men’s collection.
Bakar’s personal growth matches the pace of his development as an artist. As a result, his memories of growing up in Camden — both good and bad — are injected into his music and candidly shared with fans. Each chapter of his career directly correlates to a different part of his personal story, leaving a trail of relics that mark moments in time. “When you see an item and it makes you remember something, that’s the most important thing,” he says. For him, these memories are found pieces like the art for his debut LP and a plaque commemorating his inclusion in his favorite game series. The tokens are more than objects: They are pieces of him.
