While guest performing for Gorillaz at Denmark’s Roskilde Festival on July 7, Del the Funky Homosapien fell from the stage. This forced the band to cut their set short and Del was transported to the hospital. “I’m doing alright but will be in the hospital for a bit,” Del said in a tweet the day after.
In a brand new Beats 1 interview with Damon Albarn, the Gorillaz frontman reveals that the situation is actually quite serious and is still in the hospital. “He’s got seven fractured ribs, and he punctured his lung on one side, lacerated it on the other,” he disclosed. Albarn then said that he thought Del was going to be okay as he thought the fall was nothing major. “He’s gonna be fine. It was just a stage fall. I’ve fallen off stage several times, off stages way higher than that and I’ve been so fortunate. When he fell down, I was looking at him like, ‘Come on get up there’s 80,000 people out there and we need to finish this.’ I though I was going to able to carry the song on. I though he was going to be okay, but he really wasn’t. He’s going to be alright. It’s an awful thing that I can’t quite believe. I keep playing it through my head.”
Listen to an exerpt of the interview below where he talks about the incident and Del’s situation. Gorillaz are currently on tour in support of their latest album, The Now Now. We wish Del a smooth and speedy recovery.
