Summary

Lil Wayne revealed on 'The Joint Venture Show' podcast that the New York Yankees took legal action against the original Young Money logo

The MLB franchise issued a cease-and-desist letter claiming the stacked YM logo closely mirrored its interlocking NY emblem

Wayne respected the team's legacy and elected to change the logo rather than contest the legal notice

Lil Wayne has revealed that the New York Yankees forced him to retire the original Young Money logo due to trademark concerns. Speaking alongside Craig Carton on The Joint Venture Show, the hip-hop icon detailed how a legal warning from the MLB franchise prompted an early visual redesign for his record label.

While reflecting on his first Miami apartment at age 19—which featured a custom door displaying the initial stacked “YM” insignia—Wayne explained that the Yankees issued a formal cease-and-desist letter. The baseball team argued that the label’s stacked typography appeared too similar to their iconic interlocking “NY” emblem, a design with roots tracing back to an 1877 NYPD Medal of Valor created by Tiffany & Co. before its adoption by the team in 1909. Wayne revealed, “They just sent me a cease and desist. And I had to stop using it… I just changed my logo.”

Rather than engaging in a legal dispute with the organization, Wayne chose to comply immediately and replace the logo. He shared, “I felt more cooler getting a letter from the Yankees.” The rapper shared that he held no resentment toward the team, citing his respect for the franchise’s legendary status and considering the cease-and-desist a memorable moment during his rise in the music industry.
