It appears that Jim Carrey is eyeing the role of villain Dr. Robotnik, also known as Dr. Eggman, in Paramount’s live-action Sonic the Hedgehog film. Deadline reports that the actor is currently in final talks with the studio to play the nemesis of the titular character, played by James Marsden. If the deal goes through, Carrey would be returning to his comedic roots, taking on the role as a mad scientist seeking world domination.

Greenlit back in 2016, the popular Sega video game was confirmed to see a release in November 2019. Jeff Fowler, who won an Oscar for animated short Gopher Broke, makes his theatrical directorial debut for the film, while Deadpool director Tim Miller and Neal Moritz from The Fast and the Furious franchise will serve as producers.

Carrey recently made his return to the big screen after a long hiatus for thriller Dark Crimes where he plays a police officer and can be seen in the Showtime series Kidding.
