Rural Design Architects's Black House Is a Rustic Wonderland
Efficient design exemplified.
Scottish imprint Rural Design Architects aims to fulfill its name with each build: Specializing in timber-based construction, the company crafts sustainable spaces in the Scottish Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Its Black House, meant to house a small artist family, was recently completed in the Highlands.
Crafted to withstand time and the elements, the Black House was constructed on a strict budget with aims to comfortably house a family of three, along with a studio and study. Rural Design Architects sought to channel the organic splendor of the surrounding environment, crafting a squat, boxy structure that doesn’t obstruct the stunning views, embedded with large windows that frame the distant Loch Bracadale. Taking cues from minimal footprint ad-hoc structures, the corrugated cladding informing the structure complements the natural vista, while the inside offers appropriately cozy wood detailing and streamlined floorplans that eschew extra junctions or hallways.
