Loyal readers may remember the Wheelys name from our piece on retail’s fiction-free future. After the success of its experimental Viken flagship, the chain has opened its first 24/7 cashierless store in Shanghai. According to the rather tongue-in-cheek video above, the experience is somewhat eerie. In an attempt to deter shoplifters, customers must first link their credit card to the Wheelys app. The store’s AI is hooked up to its omnipresent cameras to greet individual customers. Clients then use the Wheelys app to scan their purchases and the app reports if stock is low.
Check out the video above and let us know if you’d choose Wheelys over Amazon Go.
