Patti Smith Inspires G.V.G.V. & Opening Ceremony's "DREAM" Collection
Taking cues from the punk poet for genderless layers.
Japanese imprint G.V.G.V. is teaming up with Opening Ceremony for a selection of distressed, oversized goods. The collection, titled “DREAM,” draws influence from the clothing of activist icon Patti Smith.
Noted for her pivotal music and poetry performances of the ’70s and ’80s, Smith preferred to dress in tattered layers, oversized shirts with ripped denim and men’s work jackets. “DREAM” stays true to that style, debuting a selection of androgynously-styled items with boxy cuts, subtle patterns and plenty of distressing. Ripped jeans and sweaters echo the staples of Smith’s wardobe, while oversized, lightweight shirts and jackets add some visual flair with hits of color. Generously-cut hoodies and shirts feature cursive “DREAM” prints on the chest and an overcoat displays a glen check pattern, alluding to one of Smith’s muted outerwear favorites. The release’s color palette maintains subtle flair, with pops of bold red and blue amongst the neutral hues.
The selection will release at a pop-up held at Opening Ceremony Omotesando on January 8; keep an eye on the label’s website for the drop.
This isn’t the only recent Patti Smith tribute; Saint Laurent paid homage to the musician with its recent collaborative colette effort.
