Toga Debuts Daring Collection at Tokyo Fashion Week

The Japanese label dabbles in deconstructionism.

Japanese fashion brand Toga revealed their latest collection at Tokyo Fashion Week. For Spring/Summer 2018, the womenswear label utilized a variety of off-kilter materials and unconventional cuts.

Unusual fabrics were key here, as the label undermined orthodox pieces of clothing with atypical textiles; nylon was used to shape tops and transparent plastic coverings appeared on the shoes and were also used as shirting. Further demonstrating the brand’s adventurous mindset, tailoring was turned on its head — blazers were cropped, with extended sleeves, pants were wide, and one jacket was even styled inside-out. Dresses featured deconstructed detailing in the form of cut-outs and colorful, contrasting accoutrement attached to the rear. Still, the collection preserved wearability with pieces like the camel overcoat and boxy short-sleeved shirt, keeping the clothing from straying too close to the avant-garde.

Like fellow Japanese designers sacai and COMME des GARÇONS, Toga’s Spring/Summer 2018 line defied conventional design, but recognizable pieces heightened its accessibility. Meanwhile, the Fall/Winter collection of Toga’s menswear imprint, Toga Virilis, is hitting stores soon.
