Facial Recognition Could Be Your Subway Ticket in the Future
The future is nigh.
Purchasing tickets for public transportation using palm and facial recognition may be approaching as tech developer CUBIC has designed a system to do such that. Although under a small user testing, the ‘fastrack gateless gateline’ concept eliminates physical barriers in place of an extended corridor that allows 65 to 75 people to walk through in a minute while their face is being scanned and synced via their smartphones for payment.
The project aims to improve efficiency at train stations, most specifically for the London underground, as the infrastructure expects passenger rates to double in 30 years. The technology to make this possible is similar to what Apple and Google use, although it collects more data. This also will combat and reprimand passengers who haven’t paid, who will be alerted to their error if they walk through the system with no money.
