Summary

  • Drake’s 18k yellow gold Rolex GMT-Master II, famously worn on the cover of his 2011 diamond-certified album Take Care, has hit the market for $500,000 USD
  • The rare reference 116758SANR features a factory gem-set bezel with 36 baguette diamonds, 12 black sapphires, and a custom OVO owl logo engraved on the caseback
  • The half-million-dollar package includes the original gold owl statue from the album artwork, two OVO varsity jackets, and exclusive Club Paradise tour merchandise

Florida-based dealer Wind Vintage is offering a literal piece of hip-hop history: the factory-gem-set timepiece worn by Drake on the cover of his diamond album Take Care. Originally owned by a former colleague of the rapper, the ultra-rare Rolex GMT-Master II was a limited off-catalog production. Rolex introduced the model in 2006 and discontinued it around 2012, producing only a couple hundred units globally. While standard versions of this reference command roughly $100,000 USD on the secondary market, this specific example is considered a genuine one-of-one due to its direct association with one of the most culturally defining albums of the 2010s.

Beyond its appearance on the iconic album artwork, the watch also cameoed in the moody music video for “Marvin’s Room.” The 18-karat yellow gold case remains unpolished, boasting a black dial framed by 36 baguette diamonds and 12 black sapphires acting as hour markers. Another 48 diamonds are meticulously set into the lugs and crown guards. What truly separates this piece from standard high-end horology is the custom OVO owl logo engraved deeply into its caseback. Dropping half a million dollars on this lot yields more than just the wristwear, as the sale includes an extensive archive of early-era memorabilia. Collectors will receive the actual gold-plated owl statue that rested on the table at Joso’s restaurant during the album’s cover shoot, alongside personal items like backstage passes, two OVO varsity jackets, and branded clothing from the 2012 “Club Paradise” tour.

Industry veteran Eric Wind handled the consignment, leveraging his background as a former Christie’s vice president who has brokered million-dollar Paul Newman Daytonas. According to the dealer, the cultural provenance of the piece accounts for nearly $400,000 USD of its total valuation. The massive premium reflects the enduring legacy of the diamond-certified record and the intense collector appetite for rapper-owned artifacts. Wind noted that pricing the unique lot required extensive deliberation, ultimately settling on a figure that represents the cultural weight of the object. He expressed a personal hope that the artist himself might step in as the ultimate buyer, bringing the storied timepiece back home to complete the circle.
