Marcelo Burlon Draws on Streetwear's Past and Present for 2017 Spring/Summer
Edgy graphics and directional cuts dominate the label’s runway.
Marcelo Burlon County of Milan‘s latest offering is a continuing study of edgy motifs and progressive construction. For 2017 spring/summer, the Italian brand also moves away from the brightly colored designs of its earlier seasons to more linear monochromatic prints. Though designer Marcelo Burlon’s signature use of graphics and elevated streetwear silhouettes remain in some form, he also takes a darker turn for the upcoming year. The use of leather and other heavier fabrics, seen particularly in the knee-high boots and the lacing on pants and jackets, give the season a bondage-esque feel — subverting the typical notion of summer fashion. Bold patterns evoke the KTZ “church print” from 2012 fall/winter, and as we’ve seen from other brands like Vetements, the use of gothic and metal-inspired typography also make their appearance in Burlon’s newest collection. What is evident throughout the collection however, is the designer’s familiarity with different aspects of today’s and yesterday’s street style trends, masterfully forming them to fit his signature aesthetic this season.
