Futura Opens "NEW HORIZONS" Gallery Exhibition at Detroit's Library Street Collective
The legendary artist pays homage to the Motor City’s culture.
Legendary artist Futura just opened his “NEW HORIZONS” exhibition in Detroit’s Library Street Collective. The gallery show features what the icon refers to as his “third act” — his works were painted on location at a Broadway Street studio, taking inspiration from the neighborhoods and cultures of the Motor City. The imagery he presents, which is “dark” and “electric,” is a translation of an important American city in transition. In addition, to coincide with the show, the Library Street Collective has also partnered with Filson and Shinola parent company Bedrock Detroit to present a new series by the artist for PUBLIC MATTER — a continuing exhibition of large-scale works around the city, which featured Shepard Fairey last year. For the opening night, attendees got to experience the Futura Labs “FL” pop up shop, showcasing some commercial products created by Futura, including a pair of Converse Chuck II sneakers, a G-Shock watch, and a Montana x Acronym spray can.
Futura’s NEW HORIZONS exhibit and PUBLIC MATTER works will run from June 18 – September 3, 2016.
