Afeni Shakur, Mother of Rap Legend Tupac Shakur, Passes Away at 69
“There’s no way I can pay you back/But the plan is to show you that I understand/You are appreciated.”

Afeni Shakur has reportedly passed away at the age of 69. The mother of hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur, who passed away in 1996, is well known for being the muse of one of 2Pac’s biggest songs “Dear Mama.” According to NY Daily News, Afeni Shakur suffered a possible cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead on May 2 around 10:30 p.m.
Afeni Shakur was also known for being a philanthropist, political, and social activist as well as being a participant in the Black Panther Party. After the death of her son, Afeni took rightful control of 2Pac’s estate as well as participated in posthumous works related to 2Pac such as co-producing the Broadway jukebox musical Holla If Ya Hear Me back in 2014 as well as being the executive producer for All Eyez on Me, a film based on the life of Tupac Shakur set to release this November.
