This morning, Universal Music Group announced it will be restructuring and reorganizing itself and displacing current CEO Barry Weiss. The reorganization will entail dividing and dismantling what was once known as the Island Def Jam Music Group, thus turning Island, Def Jam, and Motown into separate labels. Barry Weiss will be stepping down from his position as CEO of the Island Def Jam Music Group, and according to Universal, will “enter into discussions with U.M.G. about a new venture together.” Steve Bartels will assume the position of chief executive of Def Jam, Island will remain under its current president David Massey, and Motown will relocate to Los Angeles and welcome new president Ethiopia Habtemariam.
