Spotify announced a licensing partnership with Merlin to expand its upcoming artificial intelligence remix tool

The agreement adds more than 30,000 independent labels to a framework requiring explicit artist consent for fan-made derivative works

The feature will launch as a paid add-on designed to ensure creators receive proper attribution and a share of generated revenue

During its second-quarter earnings call, Spotify announced a licensing partnership with independent music network Merlin to support an upcoming artificial intelligence project. The agreement brings over 30,000 independent labels and distributors into a new framework that allows fans to legally create AI-powered remixes and covers of existing tracks. Merlin currently represents approximately 15 percent of the global recorded music market. This expansion builds upon a previous deal with Universal Music Group and positions the streaming platform as a licensed alternative to unauthorized generative AI services. Charlie Hellman, Spotify Senior Vice President and Global Head of Music, confirmed the collaboration ensures participating independent artists are credited whenever their work is altered.

The music industry currently faces a wave of unlicensed artificial audio flooding digital channels. Recent data presented by competing platforms indicates that synthetic tracks increasingly dominate daily uploads across the internet. Instead of generating completely artificial songs from scratch, Spotify designed its tool around real musicians and authentic catalog recordings. Executives noted that the product relies entirely on a foundation of artist consent, credit and compensation. Creators must explicitly opt into the system before fans can manipulate their work. Merlin CEO Charlie Lexton stated that the organization chose to partner on the project due to the platform’s strict respect for intellectual property rights.

Every fan-made creation generated by the upcoming tool will automatically route listeners back to the original source material. This mechanism generates direct financial compensation for the rights holders. The feature will launch as a paid add-on for Premium subscribers to create an additional revenue stream for the music industry. Spotify plans to release a research preview to a select group of users in the near future and noted that the product does not require a complete global music catalog to initiate the rollout. The move aims to capture the interactive audio trend while ensuring independent musicians maintain control over their art.
