Chance the Rapper Opens up About a Difficult Situation With Kanye West
“I wanted to give the idea of freedom back to artists and one of the biggest things is control of how you release your music.”

As 2016 comes to its conclusion, Chance the Rapper is ensuring his wildly-successful year is ending on a high note. Following the surprise release of Chance’s new joint project with fellow Chicago star Jeremih and his Christmas-themed mix for BBC Radio, ABC News keeps the spotlight on the Coloring Book emcee with the debut of a new Chance the Rapper feature. Connecting with ABC during the last leg of his latest world tour, Chance opens up to the network about his role as one of independent music’s most successful artists, his rise to the top, and more. Specifically, Chance speaks about declining a major label offer from his hometown hero and one of his closest industry guides, Kanye West. “It’s not easy at all, definitely not telling Kanye. It’s definitely hard keeping that resistance, but I want to teach people that it’s doable without,” Chance explained to ABC host, personality and reporter Robin Roberts when asked about the difficulties of remaining independent. “I wanted to give the idea of freedom back to artists and one of the biggest things is control of how you release your music.”
