Chance the Rapper has announced “The Coloring Book 10 Tour,” a 37-date North American run celebrating the 10th anniversary of the mixtape that changed what independent music could look like. Promoted by Live Nation, the tour opens August 11 at House of Blues in Cleveland and closes October 11 at Citizens Live at The Wylie in Pittsburgh, with stops across Montreal, Toronto, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Nashville, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, San Francisco, Seattle, and Denver along the way.

To revisit what Coloring Book was in May 2016 is to remember how much it moved at once. Released as a free streaming exclusive on Apple Music before appearing on other platforms, it arrived at a moment when the music industry was still arguing about what streaming meant for artists, and particularly for independent artists who did not have major label infrastructure behind them. Chance the Rapper answered that argument by making one of the year’s most critically celebrated projects without signing to anyone. The GRAMMY Academy responded by changing its eligibility rules to include streaming-only releases, and then gave Coloring Book three awards, including Best Rap Album, making Chance the first independent artist to win a GRAMMY. That sequence of events did not just validate one artist’s choices; it shifted the terms of the conversation about artist independence across the industry.

The project itself earned that attention on its own terms. Blending gospel, hip-hop, and live instrumentation in a way that felt genuinely new rather than merely eclectic, Coloring Book carried an emotional generosity that set it apart from almost everything released in its era. The collaborations, with Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Kirk Franklin, Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, T-Pain, and Saba, did not feel like features assembled for commercial leverage. They felt like a community gathering around something that mattered. Longtime collaborators Nico Segal, Peter Cottontale, and The Social Experiment built the sonic architecture, with additional production from Kaytranada, Brasstracks, and Francis and the Lights. Rolling Stone called it a “gospel-rap masterpiece.” The New York Times described Chance as “a crusader and a pop savant.” Complex called it “a defining moment for independent artists.” A decade later, none of those assessments feel overstated.

Artist presale for “The Coloring Book 10 Tour” begins May 19. General on-sale follows May 21.
