Bad Bunny, Lana Del Rey, Burna Boy, and More Are Taking Over the Radio in 'Grand Theft Auto VI'
Rockstar Games reveals GTA VI’s radio lineup, with Burna Boy and Palms Trax exclusively discussing AfroBank FM.
Music has always played a major role in the Grand Theft Auto universe. Whether it’s cruising through Los Santos with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg on the radio or tuning into the sounds of ’80s Miami on Vice City’s iconic Flash FM, Rockstar Games has made its in-game radio stations just as memorable as the worlds players explore. And for Grand Theft Auto VI, it’s pulling out all the stops.
Rockstar Games has officially unveiled six of the radio stations coming to GTA VI, enlisting a stacked lineup of artists and cultural figures to serve as their hosts. Bad Bunny, Lana Del Rey, Burna Boy, Morgan Wallen, Robyn, Trick Daddy, Trina, and even Slayer’s Kerry King and Tom Araya are among the names lending their voices to the game’s fictional airwaves.
Each station offers its own distinct sound, reflecting the musical landscape of Leonida, the game’s fictional take on Florida. Bad Bunny and RaiNao are taking over Cocoteo FM, a station dedicated to Latin music spanning bachata, merengue, dembow, and reggaeton. Meanwhile, Burna Boy and electronic producer Palms Trax will host AfroBank FM, spotlighting everything from African classics and deep cuts to contemporary amapiano and 3-step.
For Burna Boy, the opportunity marks a full-circle moment in his relationship with the franchise. Having previously appeared on GTA V’s iFruit Radio with “Killin Dem” and contributed “Gettin’ Money” to GTA Online’s Cayo Perico update, the Nigerian superstar is now getting a station of his own.
“I’ve been playing GTA since way before my music ever made it into the game, so this one is personal,” Burna Boy tells Hypebeast exclusively. “Then ‘Killin Dem’ got on iFruit Radio, we did ‘Gettin’ Money’ for Cayo Perico, and now I have my own station in GTA VI. That whole journey is crazy to me.”
“AfroBank FM is special because it gives us a space to bring our sound, our energy and our culture into a world I’ve been part of as a player for years,” he continues. “GTA has always understood that the music is part of the world, not just something playing in the background. To now help create that world myself feels full circle.”
Joining him on AfroBank FM is Palms Trax, whose selections reach beyond contemporary African hits to spotlight lesser-known records and sounds spanning generations. The station’s previewed tracklist includes Asake’s “Joha,” Pat Thomas and Ebo Taylor’s “Gye Wani,” and DJ Lag and Robot Boii’s “Shay’sana” featuring Kamo Mphela.
“I can’t think of anything presented on this scale, musically speaking, with such a tremendous amount of perseverance and care behind it,” Palms Trax tells Hypebeast. “Some of these songs have spent decades in obscurity and to see them be pride of place for one of the most anticipated audiences in the world is incredibly moving.”
Like Burna Boy, Palms Trax’s connection to the franchise stretches back years. “San Andreas and Vice City were some of my earliest introductions to music from outside my immediate bubble and the impact of hearing such evocative records for the first time has stayed with me ever since,” he adds. “It’s such a unique vehicle to capture people’s imaginations and I can’t wait to jump in a car and cruise around to some of the other stations.”
Elsewhere across Leonida’s airwaves, country music gets its own home on Back Country Radio, hosted by Morgan Wallen and Lana Del Rey, while metalheads can tune into The Chamber 106.6 with Slayer’s Kerry King and Tom Araya. Robyn and model Alex Consani are bringing pop hits from the likes of Charli xcx, MGMT, and Zara Larsson to the returning Flash FM, while Miami rap legends Trick Daddy and Trina will hold down Dirty South Classics, spinning Southern hip-hop staples from David Banner, JT Money, and more.
But the radio stations aren’t the only new addition to GTA VI’s musical universe. For the first time in the franchise’s history, Rockstar is introducing on-demand podcasts, alongside the ability for protagonists Jason and Lucia to listen to music and podcasts outside of vehicles through headphones and earbuds connected to their in-game smartphones.
Rockstar is promising its biggest and most diverse radio lineup to date, with additional stations spanning classic rock, blues, electronic, talk radio, and more still to be revealed. Details surrounding the game’s dynamic score and additional singles from ‘Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album’ are also on the way.
