Soldier Unveils Exclusive New Paintings At Plaster’s HQ
The London-based Nigerian artist exhibits his latest exploration of signature camo paintings titled “Military Abstractions.”
Plaster has joined forces with London-based artist Soldier, real name Leonard Iheagwam, to bring his latest set of artwork to life at their collaborative exhibition titled “Military Abstractions”.
Launching ahead of Frieze London, Soldier’s exhibition will span across the first two floors of Plaster’s HQ in Soho. The exhibit acts as an extension of Plaster’s ongoing mission of platforming young artists and bridging the gap between the art community through in-person events. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Soldier has been building himself as one of the most exciting voices growing within the London art scene.
Frequently reflecting on his personal experience, Soldier pulls inspiration from Lagos’ skateboarding scene, church and Military surplus, which materialize through various visual signatures. “Military Abstractions” explores Soldier’s staple motifs, including camouflage and toy soldiers, which act as a visual portrayal of geopolitical and military power, researching deeper into the consequences of war and foreign influence on countries that have experienced colonization. Camouflage is reclaimed from its original connotations and transformed through collages central to Soldier’s personal perspective and artistic practice.
Four out of the six new large-scale artworks set to be on display will be available for sale alongside signed posters and limited-edition T-shirts. An exclusive release of 50 original editions are also scheduled for online purchase via a registration-only drop, set to launch simultaneously with the private viewing.
It’s an exciting collaboration between Plaster and Soldier that will bring together the art world, celebrating young artists expanding out of London.
