G-SHOCK and BAIT have returned to the DW5600 for “Yamagata’s Finest,” a banana-themed take on the classic square that honors Yamagata Prefecture, the home of Casio‘s Premium Production Line. Billed as a “non-GMO” edition, the collaboration trades outside references for a tribute to the place where every G-SHOCK gets its start.
The watch commits fully to its fruit theme. The case and strap are finished in a saturated banana yellow, framing a light gray face plate that surrounds a blue-tinted digital display showing the day, date and time. The bezel keeps the DW5600’s familiar layout, with “PROTECTION” printed across the top and “G-SHOCK” lettering along the bottom in a muted contrast tone. Small dark flecks scattered across the strap appear to mimic the sugar spots that show up on a banana just as it hits its sweetest point.
That ripeness is the core joke. A banana at its peak is all about timing, which makes it a neat fit for a watch and, as the partners frame it, for two brands coming back together at the right moment. The yellow-on-gray palette keeps the concept legible at a glance without leaning on graphics, letting the color do the storytelling.
The packaging extends the bit. Rather than a standard G-SHOCK box, the watch arrives in a special can and box carrying “Shawty with Freckles,” a makeshift mascot positioned as the face of the partnership and a symbol of the cultural common ground between BAIT and Casio. In the press imagery, the character appears on a blue oval badge styled like a produce sticker, complete with a script “Shawty” logo.
The deeper story sits in Yamagata. The prefecture houses Casio‘s Premium Production Line and the factory where G-SHOCK production begins, making it a fitting focal point for a collaboration about origins. Casio’s facility there, Yamagata Casio in Higashine, is also known for producing the brand’s high-end MR-G and MT-G models. The DW5600 itself traces its lineage to the original DW-5000C, the shock-resistant square that launched G-SHOCK in 1983, so pairing the model with its manufacturing home brings the release full circle.
