Carhartt WIP and Kinto have joined forces on the Kakomi Donabe, a modern reworking of the Japanese clay cooking pot finished in Black/Grey. Instead of treating the donabe as a delicate heirloom piece, the collaboration rebuilds it as a hardwearing kitchen tool that moves between cooking methods with minimal fuss.
The biggest change is the material. Where the traditional donabe is shaped from clay, this version is made from a heat-resistant ceramic, giving it the range to sit directly over a flame, slide into the oven or go into the microwave. That versatility carries through to cleanup, as the pot is dishwasher safe.
Size-wise, the Kakomi Donabe holds 2,500 milliliters (about 85 ounces) and measures 27.5 x 14.5 x 31.5 centimeters (10.8 x 5.7 x 12.4 inches), putting it firmly in the territory of a shared, table-centered vessel rather than a single-serving cooker.
A stainless steel steam plate is included in the box, so the pot can be used for steaming in addition to simmering. The metal insert pairs the ceramic body with a second material that suits the brand’s utilitarian leanings while expanding what the pot can actually do.
Visually, the piece keeps things restrained. The Black/Grey colorway gives the ceramic a muted, workshop-ready tone, and a graphic print finishes the exterior. Kinto, a Japanese label known for refined everyday goods spanning water bottles, kitchenware and specialty coffee equipment, brings its homeware know-how to the build.
