POP MART and Sony Pictures Entertainment have officially announced the development of the Labubu Feature Film. Unveiled during The Monsters’ 10th-anniversary global exhibition tour in Paris, the collaborative project is set to bring Kasing Lung‘s beloved collectible character to the big screen.
Currently in the early stages of development, the upcoming project will be crafted as a highly detailed live-action and CGI hybrid. Acclaimed filmmaker Paul King, whose recent directorial work on Wonka grossed over $635 million USD globally, is officially attached to direct and produce the ambitious visual undertaking. Further expanding the creative roster, King will co-write the script alongside award-winning screenwriter Steven Levenson, recognized for his prominent work on Dear Evan Hansen and tick, tick… BOOM!
The film adaptation represents a massive cultural evolution for Labubu, a character that first debuted in 2015 as part of Lung’s “The Monsters Trilogy” picture books. Lung will actively oversee the cinematic transition as an Executive Producer, joining a heavy-hitting production team that includes Michael Schaefer and Wenxin She, while Brittany Morrissey will formally oversee the development for Sony Pictures. Blending POP MART’s strategic IP curation with Sony Pictures’ extensive production capabilities, the film promises an expansive new creative chapter for the highly coveted designer collectibles franchise.
