Akai Has Launched its Most Powerful MPC Ever – the 'MPC Live III'
The standalone powerhouse features an 8-core engine with 8GB RAM, 16-step sequencer, and built-in mics and speakers for portable, professional-grade, computer-free production.
Akai has introduced its “most powerful and advanced” MPC ever, the MPC Live III, which arrives with upgraded processing, expanded performance tools and a redesigned workflow aimed at beatmakers, producers and performers who want full creative control – all achieved on device without a computer.
What started in 1988 with the original Akai MPC – one of the most significant pieces of equipment in modern music and the backbone of early hip-hop and electronica – has evolved into a standalone production powerhouse that keeps the MPC’s identity intact and updates it for the contemporary producer. The MPC Live III is driven by an 8-core processor paired with 8GB RAM that, together, enable up to 32 plug-in instances, 16 audio tracks and desktop-grade features like Pro Stems Separation and Super Timestretch – all of which run on the updated and expanded MPC3 OS 3.6 software. Additionally, the new device features a built-in rechargeable battery, integrated stereo monitors and a new onboard microphone for vocals, sampling and field recording.
Performance has always been a key focus for Akai and the MPC Live III debuts MPCe pads, introducing 3D-sensing that tracks X/Y position for real-time modulation, multi-layer control and more expressive note articulation. A dedicated 16-step sequencer appears for the first time in an MPC, giving creators instant access to electronic-style sequencing, while a new Clip Matrix enables live loop triggering and arrangement without stopping playback. There’s also a performance touchstrip that sits alongside the pads for effects, pitch and modulation control.
Connectivity and I/O have also been expanded. The unit includes a 7-inch touchscreen, XLR/TRS combo inputs, six line outputs, enhanced MIDI and CV options and USB-C for 24-channel audio transfer and 32-channel bi-directional MIDI. Wireless options include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and direct smart device sampling rounds out the features found in the new standalone setup.
For users who want more, the MPC Live III includes the MPC3 Pro Pack, a feature expansion that adds premium effects, advanced CV tools, Clip Launch upgrades, follow actions, Ableton Live set import and additional mixing utilities. The pack comes bundled with the MPC Live III, but is also available separately for other compatible hardware.
The MPC Live III is available now at Akai Professional retailers worldwide, priced at £1,399 GBP / €1,649 EUR / $1,699 USD.
