The Virgil Abloh: The Codes exhibit at Paris, France’s storied Grand Palais, marks the first-ever major European exhibition solely devoted to Abloh’s work.
Just yesterday, on what would be V’s 55th birthday, the Virgil Abloh Archive™ – in partnership with Nike – opened the doors to the extensive, career-spanning exhibition, which immerses attendees in the legend’s multidisciplinary legacy, by way of his 20,000-object archive.
Curated by Chloe Sultan and Mahfuz Sultan and chronicling nearly two full decades of creative practice, the archive spans never-before-seen original prototypes, sketches, images, and other ephemera from throughout Abloh’s career, as well as pieces of his personal collections and library.
Serving as an expanded edition of 2022’s Virgil Abloh: The Codes (also in Paris), the exhibit highlights how Abloh’s “codes” carry across each one of his artistic endeavors – be it solo or collaborative. While past collaborative ventures are scattered throughout the space, new collaborative tees are introduced, including those with Stray Rats, Cactus Plant Flea Market, Babylon, L’Art de L’Automobile, and, revived solely for this occasion, Sarah Andelman‘s Colette.
As expected, some of fashion, footwear, and the high cultural zeitgeist’s most notable, needle-pushing figures stepped out to support Abloh’s undying influence. Pharrell, Shawn Stussy, Travis Scott, and Futura were joined by the likes of George Condo, Justin Sanders, Jerry Lorenzo, Kozue Akimoto, and many others.
