Y-3 Is Revved Up and Refined for FW25
Continuing to evolve Yohji Yamamoto and adidas’ sleek design codes and introducing a motorsport-inspired Neighborhood collab.
Under a strobing LED-lit screen, fluorescent white and volcanic orange lighting illuminated Y-3‘s FW25 runway show at Paris’ Pavillon Cambon Capucines over the weekend. The collection from Yohji Yamamoto and adidas‘s 2003-born label stuck to its core strengths, offering technical-infused tailoring and elegant performance gear with an ethos of restraint.
Beginning tamely, a range of all-black looks applied almost invisible tactical details to austere silhouettes, including a voluminous shell jacket with gigantic patch pockets, a lustrous collared jacket and a sleeveless trench. Slowly, an enlarged print featuring firey strokes akin to flames was introduced against black and white fabrics. Everything from long coats, trousers with knee pads, puffer jackets with Japanese-inspired belts, and knitted sweaters were adorned with the oversized pattern.
A collaboration with Shinsuke Takizawa’s Neighborhood was unveiled in the middle of the presentation through a lineup of motorsport-inspired looks, complete with cobranded racing helmets and leather motorcycle jackets. The collaboration even includes full racing jumpsuits, one of which, modeled by Gabriette, is made in an exuberant red hue. However, in pairing louder pieces like graphic leather racing trousers with more discrete pieces like a long black overcoat the thematic elements are reeled back in with pared-back elegance.
The show then began incorporating a lava-like red-orange hue into the mix, best demonstrated by a sleek chore jacket and cargo pant set worn with a tonal-printed vest. While the red-orange only appears in a few instances, the smokey tie-dye-esque print appears across more looks, including a long padded coat, windbreaker shell jackets and parachute pants.
Finally, the runway lineup ended with a familiar but evergreen theme that Yamamoto and adidas continuously iterate on. The closing section of looks plays with different applications of adidas’s three-stripes in easy, yet surprising stylizations. Stand-out looks include a black suit jacket and trousers that showcase the three stripes in varying directions, and an asymmetrically draped skirt that features the three stripes in a horizontal orientation.
