On the heels of their recent retrospective release, the art-fashion collective MSCHF is heading to Tokyo for their latest exhibition, Material Values, at NANZUKA UNDERGROUND. Opening on February 1, the exhibition follows the group’s 2024 presentation of No Shoes. No Phones. No Service, and will feature a showcase of new works that delve into “the definition and value of art,” bringing light to capitalist critique with the collective’s signature style of wit, humor and, of course, mischief.

The show circles “MATERIAL VALUE SCULPTURES,” a new sculptural series which fits cramped, indium-cast human figures atop online devices that track the real-time market value of the rare metal. As the value of indium rises, so does the temperature of the sculptures; each piece will hit a melting point, when the market value exceeds the price of the work, causing the figures to melt and self-destruct.

Also on view will be the “Animorph Painting” series which reimagines classical portraits through the lens of contemporary pop culture. Inspired by the covers of the beloved children’s book series, Animorphs, these works transform historical figures into modern icons – with Hajime Sorayama’s infamous “Sexy Robot” making an appearance – evoking the constant fluidity of beauty and art.

MSCHF’s Material Values will be open at NANZUKA UNDERGROUND from February 1 through March 22, 2025. Check out the exhibition site for more details.
