Pace Gallery’s latest film showcases Lee Kun-Yong’s recent performance of ‘Snail’s Gallop’ in their New York space, where his solo exhibition runs until August 18. A towering figure in the 1970s Korean avant-garde movement, Lee delves into his career, revealing his distinctive approach to art-making. “The artist’s body can also become a medium,” he says, underscoring his philosophy.

‘Snail’s Gallop’ highlights Lee’s large-scale paintings, performance work, and archival materials from his prolific career. It’s Lee’s first solo exhibition in New York and his debut at Pace’s flagship gallery. Having joined Pace’s roster in 2022, Lee made his mark in the 1970s, during a time when South Korea wrestled with authoritarianism and censorship. A founding member of the Space and Time group, Lee is hailed as a pioneer of performance art in Korea. While his groundbreaking performances are his signature, his artistic practice spans painting, sculpture, installation, and video—mediums that often intertwine with his live work.
