LEGO Breaks Ground on New 54,000 Square Foot Innovation Campus
Soon to be home to the world’s largest library of LEGO elements — covering a collection of around 20,000 different LEGO elements.
LEGO has officially commenced construction on its new Innovation Campus in Billund, Denmark, a facility aimed at redefining creative collaboration and sustainability in product design for the brand. CEO Niels B Christiansen and Chief Product and Marketing Officer Julia Goldin led the groundbreaking event for the 54,000-square-foot campus, which will house 1,700 employees, including more than 600 designers.
The state-of-the-art facility, part of the LEGO Group’s commitment to investing in global workspaces, aims to inspire creativity while upholding ambitious sustainability goals. Set to open in 2027, the Innovation Campus will serve as a central hub for product marketing, development, gaming and quality teams.
Designed by CEBRA Architects, the campus emphasizes LEGO’s core values. During an 18-month consultation process, employees actively contributed to the design using LEGO bricks, providing a collaborative approach to envisioning their workspace. The result is a modular structure featuring six overlapping modules with up to four floors, green spaces and maximized natural light. A central PlayWay connects various “neighborhoods,” encouraging interaction across teams.
In line with LEGO’s sustainability commitments, the building’s structure is crafted entirely from FSC-certified timber, targeting LEED Platinum standards. This choice significantly reduces upfront carbon emissions while prioritizing energy efficiency, biodiversity and water conservation.
Julia Goldin shared that the Innovation Campus will honor LEGO’s modularity, encouraging creativity and inclusivity within an engaging environment. “This space will serve as a global center for design excellence, allowing us to innovate every aspect of the LEGO experience—from groundbreaking physical products to immersive digital experiences.”
