LEGO has unveiled the Gustav Klimt “The Kiss” (31221), a 4,000-piece building set that reinterprets one of art nouveau’s most recognized paintings as a fully three-dimensional wall installation. It is the largest release in the LEGO Art line to date, and the first to tackle the Austrian modernist’s work.
The set’s construction leans hard into texture. Rather than rendering Klimt’s composition as a flat mosaic, LEGO’s design team built outward from the baseplate, layering decorated circles, spirals, studs, flower elements, and gold metallic bricks to produce a relief surface that shifts depending on viewing angle. The approach mirrors Klimt’s own mixed-media technique during his Golden Period, when the painter incorporated metal foils alongside oil paint to give his canvases a physical, almost sculptural dimensionality.
That material strategy is central to the build’s identity. Gold metallic bricks anchor the palette and carry the warm, ornamental density of the original, while the varied element shapes create a visual rhythm across the frame. Up close, individual spirals and flowers read as discrete LEGO pieces. At a distance, they dissolve into the broader composition of two figures locked in an embrace against a gilded, patterned backdrop.
The set was developed in collaboration with the Belvedere Museum in Vienna, where the original The Kiss has been on permanent display since 1908. That partnership carries through to the finished product, which includes a brick-built reproduction of Klimt’s signature integrated into the artwork. The completed piece measures over 23.5 inches (60 cm) tall, 21 inches (54 cm) wide, and 1.5 inches (4 cm) deep, and ships with a rear-mounted hanging mechanism designed for straightforward wall installation.
Beyond the build itself, LEGO has packaged supplementary content into the experience. A QR code printed in the instruction booklet links to a dedicated podcast exploring Klimt’s life and the creative impulses behind The Kiss, including the Byzantine mosaics, Japanese lacquer work, and paternal influence of his gold-engraver father that shaped his Golden Period output.
