A Race to the Top of Goodwood with LEGO Technic’s Record-Breaking Ultimate Car Concept

Last month, LEGO Technic unveiled the latest creation in its Ultimate Car Concept Series: the Koenigsegg Sadair’s Spear. Posing itself as one of the most powerful megacars from the Swedish brand, the project saw LEGO Technic translate its mechanical ingenuity into a 1:8 scale model as well as a life-size version that officially broke records as the fastest ever LEGO build.

Following its debut at Koenigsegg’s headquarters in Ängelholm, Sweden, the two builds were showcased at Goodwood Festival of Speed. On opening day, Hypebeast met up with car journalist Callum Mullins of Callum’s Cars at the annual motorsport event to check out the display. Surrounded by the latest vehicles and technology from global car brands, Mullins finds out why the LEGO Technic Koenigsegg Sadair’s Spear is making waves amongst both LEGO fans and car enthusiasts.

As with every Goodwood festival, the day begins with the Duke of Richmond completing the staggering hill climb route, then it’s straight to the Koenigsegg paddock where Mullins discovers the 1:1 Sadair’s Spear build. Positioned next to the original megacar, the LEGO Technic version sat with its doors open for attendees to take a closer look at how the components were reimagined with more than 327,000 LEGO Technic elements.

Upon stepping into the space, the first thing to grab Mullins’ attention is the outer shell. As well as simply giving the car a unique scale-like texture, the shield-shaped pieces are cleverly designed to reference Koenigsegg’s logo, hinting at more hidden details in the build. Having taken a large part of the 9,400-hour development, the skin of the car turned out to be one of the most popular features on the day with crowds of fans gathering to discover the individual panels constructed of 53 LEGO Technic elements.

It wouldn’t be a Koenigsegg car without the all-important ghost mode so, after checking out of the components, Mullins takes his place in the driver’s seat ready to initiate the feature. With several superfans looking on, the vehicle’s rear clam, dihedral synchro-helix doors and front hood are raised in one single movement, proving to be just as impressive as the original megacar.

Despite taking center stage at the event, the life-sized Sadair’s Spear build is all to celebrate the unveiling of the 1:8 scale model version, which launched globally this month. With it showcased at the paddock on its own podium, Mullins later explores the way designers brought the car’s signature functionality into a smaller structure – from the Koenigsegg wheel and the start button to a replica of the nine-speed transmission and the twin turbo that moves when the car is in motion.

To finish the day, Mullins takes his place on Goodwood Hill where the life-sized LEGO Technic Sadair’s Spear was put to the test in the challenging hill climb. After a procession of racecars and supercars, the LEGO build made its way up with Koenigsegg test driver Markus Lundh behind the wheel. Like its test run, which beat the previous 50 km/h record with a 111km/h run, it brought power and unfathomable speed to the climb.
