Supermodels in London, dads in Ohio, service industry professionals, referees and street style savants alike have cause for excitement: New Balance is set to release the 990v6 in a classic “Triple Black” colorway. Initially created to celebrate the 990 line’s 40th anniversary, the 990v6 offers a classic, look with a material mixture of mesh and suede — all bolstered by a modern-day midsole with a sharply sculpted heel plus a mixture of ENCAP and FuelCell cushioning technology.
Subtlety is the name of the game on this “Triple Black” makeup, with a monochromatic color scheme and hi-vis reflective detailing on the midfoot, quarter and trim. The only divergence from the shoe’s tonal makeup appears via the tongue, where the “v6” segment of the “990v6” wordmark is done up in red (thankfully, that’s an easy fix with a black Sharpie for those that need to fulfill uniform requirements).
Most 990v6s seen in recent weeks have featured louder color schemes, from a Teddy Santis-crafted brown and grey makeup to a Carhartt WIP-esque “Sepia Stone” iteration. However, this triple black pair slots in perfectly with its classic grey and black/white/grey colorways to complete a classic New Balance trio.
