George R.R. Martin Is Developing 3 Animated 'Game of Thrones' Spinoffs

The previously announced live-action ‘Nine Voyages’ will be animated instead.

George R.R. Martin’s sprawling universe goes far beyond Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. The author has revealed he’s working on three different animated adaptations of storylines set in the world of A Song of Ice and Fire.

Martin penned a blog post expressing his appreciation for the animation Blue Eye Samurai, after which he outlines his plans for his own shows.

While none of the forthcoming projects have officially been greenlit yet, Martin is working with HBO on the adaptations – there were originally four original animated concepts in the works when development was underway a few years ago, two of which have been shelved.

“As it happens, HBO and I have our own animated projects, set in the world of A SONG OF ICE & FIRE,” Martin wrote. “None of them have been greenlit yet, but I think we are getting close to taking the next step with a couple of them.”

In addition to the two shows that have yet to be revealed, the previously announced Nine Voyages, a prequel to House of the Dragon, will now be animated rather than live-action.

The decision was due to “budgetary constraints,” which Martin says would have made a live-action “prohibitively expensive.”

“With half the show taking place at sea, and the necessity of creating a different port every week, from Driftmark to Lys to the Basilisk Isles to Volantis to Qarth to… well, on and on and on. There’s a whole world out there. And we have a lot better chance of showing it all with animation,” he wrote.

Nine Voyages will center on ship captain Corlys Velaryon who appeared in House of the Dragon, played by Steve Toussaint.

Fans awaiting animations from Martin will be able to look forward to the second season of House of the Dragon in the meantime, slated to premiere this summer.
