Danish furniture brand, GUBI, has revealed the new Aspide Lamp by Gianfranco Frattini.
First developed in 1970 by the Italian architect, the lamp fuses elements of both industrial and playful design. The piece was named after the Italian word for ‘asp,’ which nods to its snake-like structure. Just as captivating then as it is now, the lamp’s serpentine shape now appears in eye-catching chrome and harbors the same adjustable versatility.
Comprising the lamp are specially crafted large curved steel tubes. The structure’s unique curvature then allows for the neck and head to be rotated up to 350 degrees. For added stability, the lamp includes a counterweight for when the pieces are rotated. Finishing off the lamp is a shiny chrome coating – adding to the piece’s luminescence.
“As with all my father’s designs, Aspide begins with its desired function, which is filtered through his background and preferences to produce a very strong and unique aesthetic,” said Emanuela Frattini, Gianfranco Frattini’s daughter. “Fresh, uncomplicated, and futuristic, Aspide is a true original, a shining, jewel-like object that reveals a surprising rigor and practicality.”
Priced at $799 USD, the new Aspide lamp by Gianfranco Frattini is set to release at GUBI at the end of September.
