Google and Japanese games company Taito are teaming up for a new augmented reality version of the 1978 shoot ‘em-up arcade game Space Invaders.

Inspired by the original gameplay, players are tasked with defending the Earth from Space Invaders in their neighborhood. Powered by Google’s ARCore Geospatial API and Streetscape Geometry API, the upcoming SPACE INVADERS: World Defense title combines AR and 3D renderings to deliver customizable gameplay based on your location, nearby landmarks, time, and weather, thus transforming cities into virtual playgrounds. The immersive experience looks to “reinvent the future of gaming” and “connect multi-generations of players.”

Below is the official description:

“For the last 45 years, SPACE INVADERS have tried to conquer the world. They are back and this time coming from another dimension. As one of Earth’s top pilots, you must use your spaceship’s advanced technology and your expert skills to travel between dimensions and defend the planet. The future of the Earth is in your hands! This unique, immersive game is powered by ARCore and Google’s Geospatial Creator to create a real-world playground in AR and 3D. Enjoy the classic gameplay in a whole new dimension: explore, find, and defeat SPACE INVADERS in your neighborhood!”

Look for SPACE INVADERS: World Defense to launch later this summer.

In other news, a Harry Potter Quidditch video game is on the way.
