BAPE Celebrates Its 30th Anniversary With SS23 Collection
Going back in time.
Iconic Japanese brand A BATHING APE is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2023 with its Spring/Summer collection, honoring the city of Tokyo.
Paying homage to its roots, BAPE takes a nostalgic approach, featuring designs that harken back to a rambunctious childhood and adolescence. The SS23 lookbook focuses on two narratives, “Young Rich Boy” and “Retro Film Shooting.” The former uses the BAPE®︎ Logo Monogram as its North Star, leading with velour’s sense of elevated simplicity. “Retro Film Shooting” owes its name to its medium as pieces like the Thermography Shark Hoodie and Cookie Camo Varsity Jacket are shot with film cameras, resulting in a more warm and personable aesthetic.
Underscoring its position as a beacon for Japanese streetwear and fashion around the world, BAPE’s commemorative assortment takes inspiration from various keystone moments along the brand’s history, incorporating signature motifs, trademark patterns and familiar characters, creating a wearable yearbook of sorts. The SS23 collection nods to preppy school clothing, space uniforms, sports culture as well as a more rugged outdoorsy approach. The men’s department is comprised of staples, like the Busy Work Pants, BAPE® Boyscout Shirt, as well as the statement-making and versatile Balaclava Hoodie. Dynamic patterns arrive in the form of the Honeycomb Camo print, alongside the ABC and Woodland versions, referencing the adventure-ready garments and the Japanese culture range.
For the ladies, BAPE’s SS23 collection features a range of expressive designs decked out in bold feminine graphics and playful prints. The “College” range offers a nostalgic showing with throwback designs such as the 2000’s Gradiation series and OG graphic prints, while the “Outdoor” range takes on techwear and military styling with the ladies exclusive Pink Woodland Camo pattern. The “Hip Hop” range turns the clock back to the 2000s with the Cookie Camo 2 pattern on a jacquard jacket and handbag, and Y2K outlook designs such as the BAPE Logo Monogram Tracksuit and Low Waist Denim Jeans. The collection includes accenting accessories and layering options such as the Milo Basket Bag and Tie-Dye items.
The little ones haven’t been left out either. The BAPE KIDS® collection for SS22 is a playful and bold range, featuring mixed material constructions and a variety of themes. The “School” range offers an academic aesthetic for the teacher’s pets, featuring the BAPE® CHECK print on school uniform-inspired silhouettes, while the BOY SCOUT series equips petite explorers for adventures in the wilderness. The “Outdoor” range is inspired by camping and fishing, dressed with bright and bold Woodland Camo and includes technical details on items such as the 4 Ways Jacket and Big Pocket T-shirt. The Baby Milo® range is summertime-leaning, featuring the Baby Milo® Mixed Fruit all-over print and the Baby Milo® STA DENIM in varied washes.
BAPE plans to unveil a series of collaborations celebrations, including BAPE GALLERY, BAPETAVERSE, BAPE STA for its 30th Anniversary starting in April.
