Artist Noel Mercado and USM Modular Furniture Team Up for 'One and the Same' Exhibition
Mercado’s handmade work combines with USM’s machine-crafted goods in an exploration of the man-and-machine dichotomy.
Chicago-based artist Noel Mercado has teamed up with USM Modular Furniture for One and the Same, an exhibition that explores the dichotomy between man-made goods and machine-produced pieces while also aiming to bridge the distance between them. Consisting of over 40 handmade items, which USM describes as “some wearable, some sculptural,” plus 12 furniture designs, the exhibition will take place at USM’s showroom in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood.
Among the variety of items on display, the exhibition’s centerpiece is I Can See My House From Here. Repurposing six USM Haller storage units into a light sculpture, I Can See My House From Here is equal parts high-end furniture, floor lamp and exploration of how a machine-made item can be repurposed by a human to make something totally different. Though USM is keeping the rest of Mercado’s designs under wraps for the time being, they have revealed several of his furniture designs, which range from a unique table to colorful Credenza cabinets and various storage solutions.
One and the Same opens today, March 23, with a special reception from 6-8PM, and will then be on display at the USM showroom (28-30 Greene Street, New York, NY, 10013) during the showroom’s standard operating hours (10AM-6PM Monday through Friday and 12PM-6PM Saturday).
