McDonald's France Introduces Reusable Tableware
Made in collaboration with Elium Studio.
To comply with local laws mandating that restaurants with more than 20 seats must offer reusable and washable serving containers, McDonald’s France has worked with Elium Studio for the past two years to develop a range of reusable tableware to be used at its fast food restaurants. While matching the aesthetic of its signature packaging, the containers must also be highly durable and complimentary to the tasting experience.
Silhouettes introduced include everything from plastic cups for hot and cold drinks to French fry containers and condiment holders. The material chosen for the range is Tritan, a BPA-free plastic resin that helps preserves the taste and smell of the food without the material being affected over time. Drawing inspiration from ceramics and glassware, each item in the line was meticulously designed using hundreds of drawings, mock-ups, and prototypes to replace the single-use icons. A particular emphasis was put on the object’s vents, graining, and striations.
“The anti-waste law is not only the end of plastic straws,” wrote French President Emmanuel Macron when the containers were first tested last year. “Look around you: in France, changes are at work to change our consumption patterns and reduce our waste. We are pushing to do it
globally. Let’s change the game!”
