Summary

McDonald's China has turned its instantly recognizable brown paper takeaway bag into a wearable backpack for the 12th edition of Big Fries Day

The build layers on functional detailing, from Velcro fry-carton side pockets to a padded interior sized for a laptop

The design began as a fan's handmade tribute before McDonald's China developed it into an official product

McDonald’s China has turned its most familiar piece of packaging into a bag you can actually wear, and the Big Fries Backpack commits to the bit at every seam. Rather than slap a logo onto a blank silhouette, the brand modeled the whole thing on the brown paper takeaway bag that leaves the counter with every order, then engineered in enough real utility to move it past pure novelty.

The construction starts with the shell. The exterior uses a lightweight DuPont paper material chosen to mimic the crinkle and texture of a genuine takeaway bag, printed with the Golden Arches up front alongside fry graphics and folded-bag detailing that sell the illusion. A detachable charm shaped like a McDonald’s order receipt dangles off the body, while the zipper pulls are molded to resemble individual fries dipped in ketchup, so even the smallest touchpoints stay on theme.

The most eye-catching engineering sits on the sides. A pair of red pockets shaped like McDonald’s fry cartons attach to either flank with Velcro and are built to hold actual fries, though McDonald’s leaves the wisdom of pressing greasy food against a paper-textured bag to the owner. Those pockets pull off cleanly when a slimmer profile is wanted, and the interior hides a compartment reserved specifically for ketchup packets, a small but telling nod to how completely the design maps to the ordering ritual.

Where the exterior leans into spectacle, the inside gets practical. The main compartment is fitted with dividers and sized to take a 13- or 14-inch laptop, which reframes the backpack as a viable daily commuter rather than a one-off gag. The shoulder strap continues the theme with a holder built to keep a fry carton upright, a detail that reads as either clever ergonomics or a public statement of priorities depending on your appetite.

The Big Fries Backpack is available exclusively via McDonald’s China.
