TikTok Is Reportedly Working on a Feature To Let Creators Paywall Videos
Along with a reported revamp of its $3 billion USD Creator Fund.
TikTok is reportedly devising a new way to help creators make money. The platform is currently working on developing a paywall feature, according to The Information.
Citing sources close to the matter, the publication reports that the feature would allow select creators to charge $1 USD, or a price of their choice, for access to a given video. It’s not totally clear how the system would work or exactly who would be eligible to paywall their content.
The report arrives amid TikTok’s scramble to expand its audience post-pandemic. While the app was once the most visited site globally at the peak of the pandemic, its audience growth in the U.S. – which The Information calls “the world’s biggest market for online advertising” – has stalled.
Along with the paywall feature, TikTok is reportedly planning to revamp its Creator Fund. The current fund is a $3 billion USD pool that compensates creators for their content. The new fund, however, would pay individual creators more for their videos while upping the fund’s criteria for eligibility to only those with at least 100,000 followers. It would also compensate a greater amount for longer videos.
Per the report, the new version of TikTok’s Creator Fund is already being tested in France and Brazil, with plans to roll out in the U.S. soon.
