Xbox's New Disc-to-Digital Feature Is Working on Delisted Games

Microsoft inadvertently supports video game preservation. The company officially announced the Xbox Disc-to-Digital program on August 26. This initiative formally opened to Microsoft Insiders on August 31 and added a requested feature to the ecosystem. Users quickly discovered a major loophole within the first 24 hours of the Insider launch. Digitization is possible for many physical games previously delisted from the Xbox storefront.
The mechanics are straightforward but shift how players interact with legacy libraries. This program allows users to insert a physical game disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console to add a digital version to their active account. Owners can then boot up the digitized games on other Xbox-compatible devices, such as a PC, without needing the physical disc. A rare workaround now exists for keeping media alive. Physical games typically disappear when delisted from online storefronts, which often happens when publishers lose rights to songs or franchise licenses. Preservation of these titles is possible through the Xbox Disc-to-Digital feature if users still own the physical disc.
The community immediately tested the feature and uncovered a list of working titles. According to X user Nicholas Maguire, the tool digitizes the 2013 Xbox One game Deadpool, which was delisted in late 2017. Franchise tie-in games are seeing a revival, as social media reports indicate that G.I. Joe: Operation Blackout, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, Star Trek: Prodigy and Transformers: Devastation all work. On Reddit, user Rarefroggy123 compiled a thread of functional titles including Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) and FIFA 15. Compatibility lists include Ghostbusters, Halo: Campaign Evolved, Madden NFL 23, Minecraft: Xbox One Edition, NHL 17 and Rare Replay.
Titles plagued by expired licensing rights benefit from the new feature. X user Storm360 found that the tool works with various delisted music titles, such as Avicii Invector and games from the Let’s Sing, Now That’s What I Call Sing and The Voice franchises. Another user confirmed that the 2015 rhythm game Rock Band 4 successfully digitizes. Even discontinued projects survive the digital jump. Lego Dimensions, which was discontinued in 2017, works through the tool, though players still need the USB-connected Toy Pad to add physical minifigures.
The tool is not a universal fix despite the vault of functional software. Selected titles that do not work with the Xbox Disc-to-Digital program include Dead Rising 3, Destiny, Ryse: Son of Rome, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Titanfall. Users have also reported that various Ubisoft games and unspecified delisted Sega titles are currently incompatible. Microsoft hasn’t confirmed whether the compatibility with delisted games is intentional. Future updates may add more titles to the program according to previous company statements.
