Sony launched a free, ad-supported streaming service on PlayStation 5 consoles in the United States

The platform features over 100 live channels and on-demand content powered by Sony Pictures Television

The tech giant plans to expand the streaming service to Canada and other international regions in the future

Sony is officially transforming the PlayStation 5 into a broader cultural hub by integrating a massive slate of free, ad-supported TV (FAST) channels directly into the console. As announced via an official PlayStation.Blog post, the tech giant formally rolled out the highly anticipated streaming feature for gamers in the United States on August 31, 2026. Dubbed Live TV on PS5, the new initiative allows users to tap into free live television broadcasts directly through the console’s existing media tab. It is a seamless play to keep the community locked into the hardware ecosystem long after they put down the controller.

The core of Live TV on PS5 is powered entirely by Sony Pictures Television, arriving with a massive launch-day roster that boasts more than 100 live channels. Its programming grid casts a wide net across key cultural and entertainment verticals, dropping curated feeds dedicated to movies, TV shows, anime, news, sports, documentaries, gaming, esports, podcasts and comedy. On the cinematic front, the service immediately establishes a heavy-hitting rotation by securing dedicated movie networks like MovieSphere by Lionsgate, 50 Cent Action and Sony One Horror Hits.

Beyond the live broadcast layout, the ad-supported experience is fleshing out a rapidly growing selection of on-demand entertainment options. Cult-classic television series and reality mainstays anchor the platform, giving viewers direct access to global hits like Community, The Walking Dead, Deal or No Deal USA, Fear Factor and Ice Road Truckers. The streaming anime offerings are equally stacked, leveraging legendary franchises to deliver timeless staples including Naruto, Sailor Moon, Hunter x Hunter and Death Note.

This aggressive foray into the FAST space signals a calculated shift in corporate strategy. By baking an expansive entertainment suite straight into the hardware architecture, Sony aims to monopolize user attention and keep audiences firmly planted within the PlayStation ecosystem, actively blocking momentum from competing streaming services like Pluto, Roku or Tubi. More importantly, the pivot perfectly aligns with Sony’s recent broader focus on generating major ancillary revenue directly from its massive existing customer base, moving away from a business model that relies solely on driving new hardware sales.

While the initial rollout is locked to the United States for now, Sony has confirmed concrete expansion plans moving forward. The company stated that Live TV on PS5 will continuously receive ongoing updates, promising a steady flow of refreshed programming and brand-new channels to keep the content cycle moving. From there, Sony plans to scale the streaming service globally, bringing the live platform to Canada and other major international regions in the future.
