Last year’s FIFA World Cup was a fairytale. Veteran Lionel Messi and the rest of Argentina’s squad played in one nail-biter after another and ultimately faced the next generation of talent in Kylian Mbappé and the French team. What went down in that finale is one for the storybooks as it concluded with a penalty shootout that saw Messi and his crew come out on top. Looking ahead, the 2026 World Cup takes place across North America with games in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Now, FIFA has unveiled its plans for the 2030 World Cup as it looks to involve a record-breaking three host continents and six host countries. Touching down in Africa, Europe and South America, the 2030 tournament will begin in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay before moving to Spain, Portugal and Morocco. All six of these host countries will earn an automatic qualification for the tournament as well. Immediately, fans have noted both the logistical chaos and environmental impact of this decision while also recognizing that FIFA is rolling out the red carpet for Saudia Arabia to possibly slide into the 2034 host slot.

Before everything is locked in, a formal approval process will go down next year that involves all of the 211 member federations, however, no resistance to the proposal is expected to surface.
