Reebok has found a sizable amount of success by powering up its lifestyle category with a vast miscellany of striking collaborations in recent years, and one partnership that stands out is its ongoing creative ventures with Maison Margiela. For Spring/Summer 2022, the luxury fashion house the vector imprint will be linking up to release five new sneakers, and the two styles that will be kicking off the season are the Classic Leather Memory Of and Club C Memory Of colorways,
Both silhouettes are slated to drop in monochromatic presentations and will arrive with either all-white or all-black outfits. John Galliano — Margiela’s current creative director — taps into the concept of “memory of” for this capsule which is a design technique that keys in on deconstruction. On the Classic Leather, the Parisian label discards its protective heel piece to reveal its notches and heel caps. By utilizing its signature decortiqué method — the Maison Margiela term for cutting up an item to reveal the structure that holds it together – the top half of the heel tab appears as if slightly unfinished. Mudguards are also applied above other components to expose the seams, and this in turn creates a 3D effect.
A reductive approach is then taken on the Club C iterations. Silver pen markings — which are meant to convey the maker’s process — have now been exposed, and the shoe’s original webbing bears frayed stitchings along the side. Moreover, the Reebok logos have been divided in half and amalgamated with Margiela’s insignia.
